Sunflower Wreath for HOME Sign
For this wreath I decided to do something a little different. After our annual visit to a local sunflower field, I was inspired to make a sunflower something, and this is perfect. Sunflowers seem to be more common in fall decor (and I even used them in my Cozy Fall Wreath), but summer is when they actually bloom here. So this will be what I put up for late summer. I’m just extending the sunflower blooming season in my house. 🙂
I thought about making a bunch of little sunflowers, but I decided to just go for it and make one big one. It’s just so HAPPY, and I think it turned out well! I used the same technique for making the sunflowers on my fall wreath, just on a bigger scale.

Here are the supplies I used:
- felt—brown and yellow
- scissors
- 6” floral ring
- needle and thread (brown and yellow)
- green paint
- paint brush
- hot glue gun
- glue sticks
To give the center of the flower some dimension, I cut strips of brown felt about 3/4” wide. I cut three strips lengthwise for this. I folded each one in half and made little cuts all the way down—most of which were about 1/4” apart. The biggest thing you have to watch out for is not cutting all the way through the felt and cutting off a piece. I almost did that a few times, but it worked out fine.

Once I’d made all the cuts, I took the first piece of felt and rolled it up (still folded) all the way. I took my brown thread and stuck it all the way through the felt to hold all of the layers together. I actually went back and forth a few times to make sure it felt secure. Then I took the second piece of felt and started wrapping it next to the end of the first one. I sewed a few stitches as I went along to hold everything in place. I did the same with the third piece of felt. It doesn’t look super pretty from the back, but who’s going to see it?

Once again I did not use a template for the petals. I folded the felt in half so I could cut out two at a time, and most of them ended up roughly the same size. As soon as I started sewing them on, I realized they were going to be too small to cover the whole wreath form.

So I cut another row of bigger petals, and while those were better, they still did not completely cover the form. See that little bit of brown showing?

Rather than cut more petals, I decided to paint the wreath form green. I focused on the top and outer edge, since that’s all you should see.

When the paint was dry, I used my hot glue gun to attach the flower to the wreath. I usually use Tacky glue, but hot glue worked perfectly well for this.
All that was left to do was attach a small Command strip and hang it up!

What wreath should I make next?
