Craft Room Ideas With a Few Storage Hacks

My craft room was a long time in the making. After years of working out of various closets, my husband was incredibly kind enough to give up his office for me so I could have a place to work and organize all of my craft supplies. Now that it’s done, I keep thinking about grabbing a pillow and blanket and moving in there. I love it that much. Plug in a mini-fridge and I’d be all set.

I’ve been watching a lot of Hot Mess House on HGTV, and that show has taught me a lot about my own organizational style. I actually organized my craft room before I ever saw the show, but a lot of the decisions I made make a lot of sense based on what I’ve learned. You can go here to take the quiz and find out what kind of Clutterbug you are! It may help you to figure out what kind of storage and organization you need.

I do a LOT of different crafts, so I need a lot of different storage solutions. I’ll share what I used and where it came from, and I hope you might find some inspiration in there somewhere.

First, here’s a short video tour. Then I’ll get to the specifics.

Furniture

We didn’t have a huge budget for this project, so IKEA seemed like the logical choice to go for the furniture. Really, it’s one of our go-to places for a lot of different things. We’ve bought enough IKEA furniture over the years to have a pretty good idea of what we like, so that also made it easier to find what I wanted.

The desk was in the room already, and it is perfect. It doesn’t look like it’s available anymore, but it’s part of the Kallax series—or the Expedit that came before it. Basically, it’s the entertainment center from that series with a desk attached. It works really, really well for my purposes. I love the Kallax series for storing items that are too bulky for the Billy shelves. You can also get all sorts of drawers, doors, and other inserts for it to customize the shelves even more. (Side note: we have Kallax shelves all over our house, and we love them all!)

Shoutout to my chair, which did NOT come from IKEA. It actually came from Office Depot, and I LOVE it. The bonded leather is so soft, and the whole thing is just so comfy. I practically have to fight the kids for it when they’re in the room with me.

I knew I wanted lots of shelving, and the Billy series is perfect. The shelves aren’t very deep, so the overall footprint is smaller than a lot of other shelves I looked at. I didn’t want the room to feel closed in, so this is perfect.

For my vinyl and long rolls of crepe paper, this Alex unit is perfect. It’s on wheels, so it can be moved around as necessary.

I also have a taller version of this, which I’m not sure they sell anymore. Each drawer has something different in it. I really need to label them so I can remember which drawer has what.

Even though I already had the big desktop to work on, I wanted to have a second work surface. I usually have more than one project in the works at the same time. Sometimes I work with paint that needs time to dry or resin that needs time to cure, and now I can leave those projects alone while I work on something else. I didn’t need anything fancy, so I went with this. You choose the tabletop size, and then you buy the legs separately. I love my pretty blue legs.

The only non-white piece of shelving would have gotten the boot had it not suited my needs so well. It has deeper shelves and stores all sorts of heavy things that I’d be too afraid to store on the Billy bookcases, like my sewing machine and sublimation printer.

The only non-IKEA shelving unit came from here. We moved it down from the playroom, and the bins make it perfect for storing odds and ends like painting supplies, string, and oodles of clothespins.

Organization

One thing I’m super proud of is this expandable spice rack that I found for my glitter and mica powder bottles. All but the biggest bottles fit perfectly, and they look so pretty!

I used another spice rack to organize my paint bottles. It’s so nice to be able to actually see what I have.

All of the white bins came from—where else?—IKEA! They come in multiple sizes, and the Kuggis bins even come with lids. You can use them with or without the lids depending on your own organizing style, but the advantage of the lids is that they’re stackable. Perfect for things that don’t need to be visible. I like the bins because it’s easy to see what’s in them while they’re on the shelf, but I can also easily grab them and move them to my workspace.

I use a lot of plastic boxes like these to organize jewelry parts, beads, finished jewelry, and even confetti.

I’ve also accumulated quite the collection of both glass and plastic jars, so they hold little odds and ends that can also look pretty.

There are plenty of things that look less pretty, but they have a place on the shelves and I can find what I need, so I’m not stressing about it at this point.

The last space I really need to work on is the closet. Not only does it hold overflow craft supplies (foam eggs, anyone?), but it also holds non-craft STUFF. Out of sight, out of mind, so I’ve let it go for now. Eventually, I’m going to need to dig deep and just get in there, but today is not the day. It’s not looking good for tomorrow either.

So that’s my craft room! Although here’s a better picture of what it looks like now, with projects in progress.

That’s more like it. 🙂
