I saw a clip of someone making some blocks like this in a social media video, and before I could save the video, I lost it. I figured I’d be able to make my own, and I did! I don’t know if everything in the original video came from Dollar Tree, but everything in mine did. It’s a very cute project that happens to also be very inexpensive!

Supplies:

  • Foam dice
  • Wood letters
  • Paint
  • Heart
  • Glue gun/glue sticks

I found these particular dice in the toy aisle, and they came two per pack. There were at least a couple of different dice options you could check out, though.

I used acrylic paint to paint the dice and letters, which is fine, but it takes several coats to get good coverage. However, I recently read a tip that is a game changer. Chalk paint. I knew you could use it to get good coverage on things that might be tricky to paint with acrylics, but the colors are more limited, and it’s more expensive than acrylic paint. What I learned is that you can use it as a base coat! Paint a coat of chalk paint in whatever color, and then paint over that with whatever color of acrylic paint that you want. This seriously blew my mind. I don’t know why it never occurred to me, but I’m thinking of all the pizza pans, charger plates, etc. that have given me fits, and this will make future projects so much easier!

The wood letters are not the best quality, but they are usable. I used scissors to trim up some rough edges, and that was easy to do. You do only get one of each letter per pack, so you’ll need to buy more if you’re spelling out a word with double letters.

If you’d rather not mess with the wood letters, you could also use letter decals or cut your own out of vinyl, cardstock, or whatever you’d like to use.

Dollar Tree has many different packs of hearts/heart stickers in their Valentine’s Day section. Glittery, felt, foam, etc. I liked the glitter hearts best for this project. I only used one heart, but I did use more of them in other crafts.

How to make some blocks

Painting the dice was the most challenging part. I hadn’t yet discovered the chalk paint trick, so it took me several coats of acrylic paint before I got to the point where I was happy with them. I didn’t quite get perfect coverage, but I actually like how it looks. You can’t really tell the original color of the dice, and that makes me happy enough.

After I painted the dice, I painted the letters. This was super quick and easy.

Once all of the paint had dried, I used my glue gun to attach the letters and heart to the dice.

That’s all there is to it! These look super cute displayed on a shelf, and they’d also be perfect on a tiered tray. I’m even considering what other holidays I could make these for. LUCK for St. Patrick’s Day? JOY for Christmas? These could even be double-sided! I have lots of ideas.

Happy crafting!
