I think the theme for my Valentine’s Day crafting is generally Dollar Tree or things I already have. It’s pretty great, actually. I don’t spend a lot of money, but I still end up with some very pretty things! I love browsing Dollar Tree to see what new things they come out with each year (and which returning favorites they bring back).
This tutorial is a little light on pictures, but that’s because there’s really not a whole lot to this process.
Supplies
- Large foam rose
- Foam roses
- Glue gun/glue sticks
Everything I used for this came from Dollar Tree, with the exception of the glue gun and glue sticks. Those I already had. I did use my new favorite (cordless) glue gun for this, and I still love it as much as the first time I used it.
The foam roses come in three colors, and there are 18 in each bag. I ended up using six full bags and one almost full bag. That covered the front and back. I had only planned to cover the front, but I changed my mind as I was in the middle of it. I only found the red and pink when I was shopping, and I’d actually forgotten that there were white ones until my daughter pulled out a bag she’d bought. She only needed a few of them, and I claimed the rest. That’s why there are only a few scattered white roses, and only on the front.
The process of making this is very simple. I started with a rose in the center of the front and worked out from there. I put glue on each rose and then held it in place for a couple of seconds before moving on to the next one. Depending on how many colors you can arrange them however you want. I like the way this looks with just a few white roses, but I was careful to space them out so they weren’t all clustered in one spot.
By the time I got to the back of the heart, I reversed the process and started working from the outside in. I think both sides turned out equally well, so you can start wherever you want.
Once I had all the flowers attached, I spent some quality time pulling off all the glue strings. There’s something kind of satisfying about that process, and I don’t even know why.
I haven’t quite figured out how to display the heart. I was originally planning to mount it to something I could hang on the wall, but since both sides are finished I have more options. I’m thinking of painting a dowel rod and sticking that into the bottom. I can stick that into a vase (into a piece of foam if necessary to keep it upright), and it’ll make a lovely table decoration.
Or maybe I’ll attach some fishing line so I can hang it. So many possibilities!
Doesn’t it look good enough to eat?! The foam roses remind me of cake. Yum… Now I want cake.
Happy crafting!
