Yarn Scrap Heart Art

One of my favorite Christmas crafts from this past year was a colorful pom pom tree. I  love it so much that I seriously considered leaving it out year-round. I made so many pom poms and shaped them so carefully that I ended up with a whole lot of pom pom scraps—basically fuzz, in this case. It’s so colorful and fun that I had to save it. This jar has been sitting on a shelf in my craft room for the past few months, and I finally got around to making the first thing I envisioned doing with it: a beautiful, colorful yarn scrap heart. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or year-round decor!

  • Pencil
  • Craft stick
  • Paint brush

As I said, the yarn scraps I have are almost entirely fuzz, but I could see this with bigger scraps, too. Whatever you happen to have stashed away.

I used one of my favorite 8×8 shadowbox frames for this because that’s what I had on hand. I’ve seriously used these for so many different things.

I intended to go a different route for the background, but then I found the 8×8 canvas and used it instead. I actually did the same thing for my Cassette Tape Shadow Box, so I knew it would work. But here are my other ideas:

  • ModPodge paper (pretty scrapbook paper) or cardstock onto the backing of the frame
  • Paint the backing of the frame with acrylics

I was overthinking this big time before I got started. I envisioned yarn fuzz getting everywhere and making a big mess, and I considered cutting a heart with my Silhouette Cameo, but it ended up being very simple and neat.

I used my trusty Tacky glue, but plain old Elmer’s would probably get the job done just as well.

To start, I drew a heart on the canvas in pencil. I kept changing it until I was happy with it. I erased any lines that might be visible. Otherwise, I didn’t worry about it since I knew it would be covered.

Using a craft stick, I covered the inside of the heart with glue. I tried to get the coverage as even as possible.

I took bits of yarn fuzz out of the jar and pressed it down into the glue, taking care to follow the edge of the heart as closely as possible.

Touch-ups were a bit tricky. I ended up removing yarn when I was trying to add glue, so watch out for that.

Once I was happy with it and the glue dried, I put the canvas in the frame. The canvas is a very snug fit, and I don’t think it’s ever coming out of there. I kind of regret not making sure the glass in the frame was super clean. If you’re using something else for the background, you don’t have to worry about that!

There you have it! I haven’t decided if I’m going to leave this out year-round or store it with my Valentine’s decorations. What other shapes could I make?

Happy crafting!
