Washi Tape Leaf Wreath for HOME Sign

When I was brainstorming different fall project ideas, my kids actually helped me come up with this one. As with most of my projects, it evolved over time. The idea to have the kids draw leaves came first, and then came the washi tape. I originally wanted to make a garland, but I wasn’t sure how long it would end up being with just one page of leaves. As it turns out, I probably could have gotten a decent length. But I love the way this wreath looks on my HOME sign! It would also look pretty just hanging on the wall.

Supplies:

We did a similar project in the past with scraps of washi tape. I had made a clothespin and washi tape wreath, and in the process I had to cut down some of the tape to fit the clothespins.  I put the extra tape on a piece of paper, which I later used to make the butterflies. I decided to use the same technique to make the leaves.

Fortunately, I still have my ridiculous collection of washi tape. I’ve used it for so many different projects! Even if you just have a few different kinds, you can alternate them.

Here’s what I did…

To start, I had the kids draw leaves on a piece of paper. It’s just regular printer paper, but any kind of paper should work. (For the butterflies, I had each member of the family draw one.)

I set aside the paper while I painted the wreath form. I wasn’t sure how much the leaves would cover the wreath form, so I wanted to make sure to paint it a pretty color.

Painting the wreath form was quick and easy. I would ordinarily use craft acrylics instead of what I used, which came from the fine art aisle, but it worked great!

While the paint was drying, I turned my attention back to the leaves. I flipped the paper over to the back, and started laying out the washi tape. I covered the entire page. I love that you don’t know what you’re going to get until you cut out the leaves (or butterflies… or whatever).

So the next step is to cut them out. Some of the kids’ leaves were a little intricate, but none were too difficult.

Once the paint was dry on the wreath form, I started gluing on the leaves. I placed them on the form first to get an idea of what they would look like, and then I started gluing. I used tacky glue for this, but hot glue would also work.

The leaves want to curl up, but I’m not concerned about it because that’s what real leaves do.

Here’s the final wreath! Isn’t it pretty? There’s a lot going on for sure. 🙂

The last step was to put a small Command strip on the back so I could hang it up. It looks so pretty on the sign! The sparkly tape really catches the light.

For the butterflies, I just glued them on a piece of paper and put them in a frame. That little piece of art is so precious to me that it has sat out ever since. I love it so much. I’m thinking about making a leaf garland after all because I’m loving these leaves, too.
