Hello Fall Cardstock and Yarn Garland

I’ve made my first fall craft of the year! Now that it’s September, bring on the leaves and pumpkins. It’s been a particularly hot summer, so I am ready!!

I knew I wanted to make a garland for my fireplace, and I was originally envisioning a leaf garland. I came across this ‘hello fall’ design in my Silhouette library, and that sparked an idea. I wanted to give it a little more texture somehow, so that’s how I came up with the idea for the yarn. I’ve been playing with different kinds of yarn for another project, so I happened to have the perfect orangish yarn to use! Makes it a little cozier, don’t you think?

Here’s a list of the supplies I used:

This is a great project for using whatever you have on hand. Any of these items could be substituted for whatever you have. You could certainly do this project without a cutting machine, but of course it makes the cutting a lot faster.

Here’s how I made my garland.

I started out by sizing the design the way I wanted it in Silhouette Studio, and then I let the machine cut it out. I used four colors of plain cardstock, so that was easy enough.

Once I had the words and leaves cut out, I added the yarn—and a little sparkly bonus. Using my glue gun, I slowly glued on the yarn. I only squeezed out a little glue at one time, and then I carefully pressed down the yarn, trying hard not to burn myself. The ‘hello fall’ is written in cursive, so I had to think a little bit about how the letters are written. It was pretty easy, though!

Just to add a little sparkle, I put a little Tacky glue on the yarn and cardstock at the beginning of each word, and then I added a little bit of leaf glitter/confetti. I love the way it looks.

To figure out how long I wanted the garland to be, I held up the twine against the mantel. (I had to enlist help for this part.) Then I folded the twine in half to find the middle so I’d know how to lay out the design.

I marked the center with a pair of scissors and stretched out the twine across my kitchen island. I flipped the words upside down and laid them out how I wanted them. From there I was able to figure out where the twine should go. I put some glue on the cardstock and then pressed the twine into it. Once I had the words glued on, I added the leaves on either side.

I realized after I was done that I had glued the leaves on the back of the twine instead of the front. Oops! Not a big deal. I don’t even think it’s noticeable unless you’re up close to it.

To hang the garland, I just used scotch tape. The yarn makes the whole thing a little heavier than I expected, but I think the tape might actually hold. As always, if not I’ll figure something else out.

I think it looks good! What else should I put on the mantel? It always stumps me, mostly thanks to the tv and giant speaker. I think one of my fall craft goals will be to make something to put up there.
