Easy Suncatcher Window Clings
I’ve got a quick and easy one for you today! If you’ve been here a while, you know I love color and sparkle and alllll the rainbows. I also love prisms and suncatchers and anything iridescent. We were recently at my in-laws’ house, where I immediately noticed the most beautiful rainbows on the floor. They were coming from circles of various sizes on their windows, and I recognized the material as being window film.
The reason I recognized it is that my parents used that very same window film pattern on their bathroom window and gave me what they had left over. They knew I’d find something to do with it. It has taken me years, but here we are!
I loved the circles—they reminded me of bubbles—but I wanted to try butterflies instead.

What I love about window film is that it’s mess-free, doesn’t leave any sort of residue, and can be easily moved. If I want to change out my butterflies for snowflakes this winter, no problem!
The window film I have is Rabbitgoo brand. You can find this same pattern from a bunch of different brands, but this is the one I have experience with. It also comes in a bunch of different sizes, but you don’t necessarily even need a ton of it to make a lot of little window clings.
I used my Silhouette Cameo for this, but if you don’t mind cutting, you could also use scissors. I would trace the design onto the film’s backing sheet with a permanent marker and then cut it out. Once you remove the backing sheet, you’ll never even see the marker if you don’t cut it out perfectly.
I fully expected to use trial and error to figure out the cut settings, but it turned out to be super simple! I selected “Window Cling, Printable” and it was PERFECT. It cut through the window film but not the backing. Just make sure to cut it with the textured side up.
So here’s what you do:
1. Decide which shape(s) you want to use. I used butterflies I had in my Silhouette Studio library.
2. Size the shapes however you want and fill the page with them. I used scraps of window film, so I used my cutting mat and created documents of roughly 12×12 and 9×12. My biggest butterflies were about 3.5”x2.5”, and I was able to fit a bunch of them on the page!
3. Change the cut settings to Window Clings, Printable and cut out your shapes—textured side up.

4. Follow the instructions that came with the window film to put the shapes in a sunny window. The way I did it was spray a little water on the window where I wanted each butterfly to go. After I placed each butterfly, I smoothed it out to get rid of any bubbles trapped underneath. Easy peasy!
That’s it! When the sun shines through your window clings, they will look beautiful! They look beautiful in any kind of light, but when the sun shines directly through them they are stunning.
Here’s what they look like in different kinds of light…

Here are a couple of examples of the rainbows they create…

Happy crafting!
