DIY Hanging Heart Strands
I had so much fun decorating for Valentine’s Day last year that I’ve decided to keep going this year and see what else I can do. We have a chandelier in our dining room that I was itching to decorate somehow, and this is what I came up with. These hearts could be hung anywhere, though.
This is truly a quick and easy project that looks really sweet when it’s done.
Here are the supplies I used…
- Cardstock
- Fishing line
- Tape
- Glue
- Scissors
Optional:
- Cutting machine (like the Silhouette Cameo)
A couple of notes about these supplies…
I used fishing line, but string, yarn, ribbon—or whatever else you can think of—would work as well.
I used Tacky glue to glue the hearts together, but after the fact, I was wishing I’d dug up some photo squares or glue dots or something. A few of my hearts wrinkled a bit from the glue, and I had to sit something on top of all of them while the glue set a bit.
Here’s how I made my heart strands!
To start, I traced a heart image in Silhouette Studio. I arranged them on the canvas in two different sizes to cut out, and then I used cardstock in various Valentine’s Day colors. I had been sticking to red, pink, and white for my decorations, but I didn’t have patterned paper in those colors. I had to get a little creative in my color palette.
I opted to cut out whole sheets of hearts (more than I needed), figuring I’d find something to do with the leftovers. I did want my hearts to be double-sided so that they would look pretty from all sides. I needed twice as many hearts just for that reason.
Cutting out the hearts went pretty quickly thanks to my Cameo. I love this machine. I just had to remember to change the cut settings according to the different kinds of cardstock I used.
Once I had all of the hearts cut out, I started assembling the strands. The first thing I did was tape down the end of the fishing line. I slid each heart underneath and used tape to hold everything in place. Once I’d laid out each strand of hearts, I went back and glued them all together.
After I’d finished each strand, I tied a knot in the top of the fishing line and cut it off.
Since I was hanging my hearts from my dining room chandelier, I needed six strands of the little hearts and three strands of the big ones.
