Winter Tree Candleholder or Vase
The inspiration for this project came as I was looking for ribbon for a Christmas garland. I came across the tree ribbon in three different colors and knew I needed to figure out something to do with it. I envisioned layering them somehow, and this is what I came up with! I think it makes a beautiful wintery scene.
This is a quick and easy project that really doesn’t require a ton of supplies. I’ll tell you what I used, but I’ll also offer some other suggestions in case you can’t find any of these particular items.

Supplies:
- Glass vase/jar
- Tree ribbon
- White paint
- Paint brush
- Scissors
- Glue gun/glue sticks
- Faux snow
- Battery-operated tea light or fairy lights
The most time-consuming part of this whole process was finding the vase. I wanted something that was wide enough to fit my hand so I could put a candle in it, so it also couldn’t be super tall. I found a possibility at the Dollar Tree online, but when I went to look for it, every store was closed. So I found this at Walmart for $2.97. It’s bigger than I was going for, but it works! If you have an old vase or a jar, you could easily use that. This vase is actually a similar size to Bath & Body Works’ three-wick candles, so this would be a terrific way to reuse those once you’ve used up the candle. Whatever you like!
The tree ribbon might be difficult to find, but you could achieve the same look by cutting trees out of felt. Or even cardstock! If you have a cutting machine (like the Silhouette Cameo), you could even let the machine do the work for you.
Here’s what I did…
I started by gluing the top layer of trees with a little bit of hot glue. Then I added the bottom two layers, a little lower and staggered enough that you can see as many trees as possible.
To add the snowflakes, I used the end of a paintbrush and some little metal dabbing tools I have. The end of the paintbrush is all I really needed. The amount of pressure you use determines how big the snow is. I tried to do lots of different sizes all over.
On one of my most recent Dollar Tree trips, I picked up some bags of faux snow in different sizes. These are pretty cool; they’re little foam balls. They’re a staticky mess, so definitely something I want to keep contained, but I like them. I used the biggest size for this project.
Because I put the foam snow in the vase, I can only use battery-operated lights. I like those a lot, anyway. I had planned to use a battery-operated tealight, but I couldn’t find mine. I have a bunch of mini strands of fairy lights, so I used those instead. Look how pretty it is all lit up at night!
I used very little of my tree ribbon, so I’m trying to come up with more ways to use it.
